Year Three

Welcome to Year Three!

The teachers in Year 3 are Mrs Patrick (3SP/SM), Mrs McCallum (3SP/SM) and Miss Welbourne (3GW). In 3SP/SM Mrs Patrick teaches on a Monday and Tuesday and Mrs McCallum teaches on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.   In 3GW Miss Welbourne teaches Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and Mrs Patrick teaches on a Friday.

The Teaching Assistants in Year 3 are Mrs Lee (3SP) and Mrs Parkinson (3GW).  Mrs Lee teaches both classes French on a Wednesday morning and Mrs Parkinson sets up their spellings and tables with both classes on a Wednesday morning.

During the Autumn term the children normally have the opportunity to visit Tropical World as part of their Rainforest Topic and Murton Park (Brigantium) as part of their Roman Topic. Both trips will help to support the children with their learning and further their understanding of the topic in a fun and interesting way.

In addition to these topics the children will be learning about Soils, Fossils and Volcanoes and Forces. To get our volcano topic off to an explosive start we have a visitor from Hull University who explodes volcanoes with us on the playground and lets us look at the University's examples of rocks and fossils.

In literacy the children will be reading the following books as a class The Hodgeheg by Dick King Smith and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. These books underpin the activities and learning the children will do during their literacy lessons such as letter writing, Biographies, creative writing, instructions and reports.

The children in Year 3 have PE on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings during these lessons the children will be learning lots of new skills and abilities through Netball, Cricket, Rugby, Hockey and Athletics.

We would like in Year 3 for the children to read a minimum of 3 times a week, it could be a school reading book or a book they are reading at home. The children will get jigsaw stamps (our class reward system) when they have achieved this.

We look forward to working with you and your children this year.

Harvest Visit to Christ Church

This morning in the sunshine the Year 3 children walked along with their Harvest Festival offering to Swanland Christ Church.

The children had a lovely time at the church listening to different Harvest stories and learning about the importance of fruit and vegetables and sharing their food with others.

The children also enjoyed singing the traditional Harvest Samba.

As a class we explore and record  all the features of our village both man - made and natural, we use this information and compare our village with the Rainforest and later during lesson time take part in lots of interesting activities exploring our findings further.

Year 3 Visit to Tropical World

The children in Year 3 have the amazing opportunity to Visit Tropical World in Leeds.

The visit to Tropical World supports the children's Autumn Term Topic Rainforests.

The children in the morning session are able to experience going on a bug hunt and finding all sorts of wonderful creatures in the woods and additionally learning all about animal foodchains and new scientific vocabulary from the Leeds Parks rangers.

After the lunch the children go to Tropical World. The children have a brilliant time seeing all the tropical fish and animals and experiencing the tropical climate. The children learn so much on this trip that will help them during this Topic.

When the children are back at school the information they have learnt and gathered from their visit to Tropical World they will use further in their Topic activities to learn about for example habitats and foodchains.
