Welcome to Year Six!
The Year 6 teachers this year are Miss Green (Class 6KG) and Mrs Neal and Mrs Sivarajan (Class 6AN/JS). We also have Mrs Wright taking ICT lessons this year. The Year 6 teaching assistants are Miss Horler and Mrs Lamb; Mrs Martin and Mrs Hamilton (previously Miss Cooper) are also working with our year group every week this year.
PE and Games lessons
These are usually on a Monday and a Thursday. Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit, clearly labelled, in school.
As in previous years, please listen to your child read as often as possible each week, help them to practise and learn their tables and spellings and encourage them to practise their Maths on Mangahigh. The Year 6 expectation is to read aloud at home at least 5 times every week. In your child's homework diary, please sign your initials next to the pages your child has read aloud and discussed with you each day.
Please be aware that additional homework is given out every Friday and the children are rewarded for handing their completed work in on a Monday morning. You can write a note to your child's teacher in their homework diary if you have had a particularly busy weekend and they need more time.
At times, your child may be given extra homework to practise particular skills. Please remember to check and sign your child's homework diary every weekend. There are homework deadlines, useful reminders and details of upcoming events for you to see.
What Makes Year 6 Special at Our School?
(Please be aware that some of our usual Year 6 activities may not be able to go ahead this year, due to the Covid 19 restrictions.)
There are lots of special Year 6 experiences which help to prepare our pupils for their transition to Secondary School. We encourage the children to become responsible, organised, well-motivated, independent learners, who can work well in a team and value the contributions of others. The special opportunities and activities undertaken with our year group include: homework diaries, to get signed every week; transition lessons with South Hunsley teachers; drop-off duty (helping children and parents using the ‘drop-off' area at the front of the school); basket duty (giving out the baskets of letters to classes and doing other office jobs); half a day of outdoor trailer team-building activities; main parts in the Y5/6 play at Christmas; our ‘Moonbase' Team Challenge; a day of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities off-site; a chance to take part in the maths team challenge at South Hunsley; making Egyptian death masks in the summer; a chance to be a school council representative, a form representative or a ‘JTA' (Junior Travel Ambassador); the Year 6 residential (four days and three nights away); and possibly even the opportunity to become ‘Teacher for the Day'! These are in addition to our many inter-school sporting competitions - from football and hockey, to cross country and athletics.
You can see details of the Year 6 curriculum below and we hope you will also enjoy our photographs of some of our special Y6 activities. Of course, we will also be sending out photographs of this year's activities to parents, over the course of the year, using the Seesaw app we have in school.

Main parts in the Y5/6 play at Christmas
Every December, Year 6 take all the acting and backstage parts in the musical play we perform (and Year 5 provide the choir). Recent productions have included ‘Ebenezer' (based on ‘A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens), ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat', ‘Panto Pandemonium' and ‘Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies'.
