Welcome to Year 5. We are looking forward to a fun filled year of learning.
The teachers in year 5 are Mrs Cooper (5RC) and Miss Richardson (5DR). Miss Spizer teaches in 5RC every Wednesday. On a Friday morning, Mrs Martin teaches RE and music, and Mrs Anderson teaches art. The teaching assistants are Mrs Aamir, Mrs Goulding and Mrs Ellis.
Our topics this year are WW2, Ancient Maya, living things and Ancient Greece.
Our visits may be slightly different this year. We are hoping to visit Eden Camp in the Autumn term and Robinwood in the spring term. We will later confirm if we are able to visit Tophill Low Nature Reserve, in the summer term.
During history and geography lessons, the children will be learning about many different aspects of World War 2, from evacuees and clothing to leaders and countries involved. The children are very welcome to bring in any WW2 artefacts or talk about something interesting they know about the war. Obviously due to the current climate, no other children will touch any of these artifacts and they will need to be taken home the same day.
In Literacy, we will be reading Goodnight Mister Tom and Letters from the Lighthouse. The children will be creating their own poems, recounts, play scrips and a historical fiction story.
In maths, the children will be learning about place value, statistics, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
During PE sessions the children will be developing team skills and coordination skills, through team sports and social distancing activities.
Throughout lessons and activities, children will develop their PSHCE and wellbeing knowledge. We will explore personal qualities, internet safety and their contribution to the community. Alongside this, we will be having ‘check ins’ and circle (line) time to discuss feelings and emotions.
In science, the children will be concentrating on properties and changes of materials. Conducting and evaluating a number of scientific experiments.
Miss Richardson will be teaching French, focussing on feelings/opinions, school subjects, the city and Christmas.
Miss Spizer will be teaching ICT, focussing on digital media, programming and control.
Mrs Anderson will be teaching art, developing drawing and painting skills whilst focussing on a particular artist.
We look forward to working with you and your children this year
