Year 5

Welcome to the Autumn term of year 5. We are looking forward to a fun filled year of learning.

Our first topic, in which we focus on history and geography, is World War 2. We are visiting Eden Camp and will be taking part in an evacuee day; we are also making food in the kitchen using WW2 rationed recipes. The children will be learning about many different aspects of World War 2, from evacuees and clothing to leaders and countries involved. The children are very welcome to bring in any WW2 artefacts or talk about something interesting they know about the war.

In Literacy, we will be reading Goodnight Mister Tom. The children will be creating their own newspaper report, historical fiction story, a recount of an event and writing their own diary entry.

In maths, the children will be learning about place value, statistics, perimeter/area, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

During PE sessions the children will be developing team skills and coordination skills, through hockey, football, gymnastics and dance.

Throughout many lessons children will develop their PSHCE and wellbeing knowledge. We will explore personal qualities, internet safety and their contribution to the community.

Each half term the children will take part in a design and technology weeklong project, in which they will be making a doll or a toy. Alongside this, they will create their own miniature Anderson Shelter and use the kitchen to follow WW2 ration recipes.

In science, the children will be concentrating on properties and changes of materials (5RC’s science will be taught by Mrs McCallum).

Miss Richardson will be teaching French, focussing on feelings/opinions, school subjects, the city and Christmas.

Mrs Cooper will be teaching ICT, focussing on digital media, programming and control.

Mrs Hamilton (was Miss Cooper) will be teaching art, developing drawing and painting skills whilst focussing on a particular artist.

Mrs Martin will be teaching RE and music, where the children will be discussing expressions of faith and listening, appraising and composing a selection of music.
