Mr Joe Russell

Joe Russell was raised in Dunswell and attended Dunswell Primary School. He started work at British Aerospace before moving into the family business where he is currently the Managing Director.  With this experience Joe brings his business acumen to the role of Chair of Governors.
Joe became a Governor when his eldest daughter started at the school and has since seen all three of his children flourish at the school.
Joe played an active role in helping the school achieve Academy status.  He became Chair of Governors on 1st September 2013.

Mrs Caroline Palmer

Caroline was brought up in Beverley and left Beverley High School to work at Lloyds Bank plc. After working there for eight years, she left her job as a mortgage advisor to join her husband as licensee of The Ship Inn in Dunswell.

Caroline has been a community governor since 2010, and holds the roles of Vice Chairman and Numeracy Coordinator. She has two children, both at Dunswell Academy, and enjoys riding, skiing and scuba diving.

Mrs Catherine Barker

Catherine grew up in Dunswell attending both Dunswell Primary and Cottingham High School.

After finishing college she took 6 months out to travel.  She returned to the UK 41/2 years later after working her way around The Caribbean, New Zealand and Australia.

She returned to work as a Landscape Manager whilst gaining NEBOSH and CITP qualifications.  This enabled her to move into the Health and Safety and training side of the industry.

In 2004 she married Shaun and managed their first self-build, where they now live with their 2 daughters.  Their eldest daughter is in Class 1 at Dunswell Academy and their youngest is at Dunswell play group.

Catherine has held her current position as the Operations Director for their Civil Engineering Company since April 2004.  This role includes undertaking the duties of Company Secretary, Health & Safety Manager, HR, accounting and staff training.

As a parent governor she hopes to now give something back to the school that has been a part of her and her family’s life for a long time.

Mrs Kirsty Sutcliffe

Kirsty is a qualified accountant, being a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and currently works at Smith and Nephew plc as a Finance Manager. Kirsty has also previously worked at companies such as Aviva and Green Flag. With this experience Kirsty brings her finance expertise to the role of Chair of the Finance committee.

Kirsty is married to Mark and is Mum to 3 boys and became a governor when her eldest son started at the school in 2010. Kirsty has previously been vice chair of governors and played an active role alongside other governors in helping the school achieve academy status.

Mrs Elaine Atkinson

Elaine lives in Dunswell and first joined the governing body in 2012 as a Community Governor.
Education has always been her passion and she taught at Longcroft School in Beverley for 30 years. Her career then took a new path when she became an Education Coordinator for the Children and Young People’s Service in Hull. She worked with and supported Looked after Children and Children in Need for 6 years.
She now works for North Lincolnshire in a local primary school teaching P.E. to Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 as well as supporting vulnerable children with behavioural problems.
She is pleased to see Dunswell Academy thriving and at the heart of the community.

Mrs Louise Harte

Louise attended both Dunswell Primary and Cottingham High School to then go on into the Travel industry, and has remained there for nearly 20 years.  She was previously in management there until marrying and having her daughter, who also attends Dunswell Academy in Class 1.

Her son also attends Dunswell Playgroup and is due to start school next year.

As a Parent Governor Louise has a particular interest in Special Educational Needs and hopes to progress in this area and use the knowledge she already has to give something back to the school.

Mr Chris Huscroft

Chris was brought up in Goole and attended Hook Primary School and then Vermuyden Secondary School. He went on to study for four years at St Martin’s College Lancaster, where he gained his BA with QTS (Qualified Teaching Status). Throughout his time at St Martin’s, Chris retained strong links with schools in the East Riding. When Chris qualified he returned to Cottingham where he had completed a teaching placement, to take up his first full-time teaching post. He now calls Cottingham home having lived there for the past seven years.

In 2009 and after six years of teaching in Cottingham, Chris was appointed as the Deputy Headteacher here at Swanland Primary. Throughout his time here he has taught in Year Five and is now working with classes across Key Stage Two providing PPA cover for their teachers. He is also subject leader for maths and having a real passion for curriculum design spends a lot of time working with staff and children to ensure that the curriculum continues to be as ‘outstanding’ as it always has been. Chris played a key management role in the smooth transition to Academy Status in 2011.

Outside of school Chris spends a lot of time with friends and family. He enjoys eating out, trying new foods, getting out and about on walks and visiting his family holiday home in Marbella, Spain.
